This paper reviews four distinctive though overlapping patterns of analysis and three different but complementary orientations in the contemporary studies of functional varieties of language. It suggests that such a situation is indicative of the increasing multidisciplinariness in the studies and concludes that this change may bring about more complexities as well as a more promising prospect for our research efforts in this field.
