In January 1996, archaeologists excavated a well preserved tomb (coded 96HM267) from the Wangmang era of the Han dynasty, located on the northern side of the Shaxi Road within the city of Luoyang. The tomb was a vaulted brick structure of a vertical shaft composded of a tomb passage, a tunnel, a main chamber and a side chamber. A short wall stood at the eastern wall, and in its front was an altar placed with wooden slip-like objects and other tomb furnitures.
Large quantities of pottery were yielded, including some minor granaries and jars which contained a variety of plants and foods, each being tagged in red characters on the surface of the vessel. There are also some bronze, iron and stone objects. One of them, a bronze mirror with 'four deities'and 'L'designs, bore the inscription reading 'the fifth month of the second year of the Yongshi reign'. All these discoveries provide new materials for the studies of the Wangmang period in the Luoyang area.
