Located to the north of the county seat of Quyang near Taiyuan in Shanxi, the temple was considered a survival from the Nurchen Jin dynasty by the archaeological reconnaissance in 1985. The concerned government department endorsed the moving , to the county seat,of the grand hall which would be difficult to preserve at its original place. The inscription,on the wooden frame,of the Qianyyou reign period of the Northern Han dynasty of the Five Dynasties combines with other evidences in dating its first construction to Five Dynsaties, despite its present appearance as the result of renovation in the Nurchen Jin dynasty. This south-facing hall of an approximately square plan has three bays both in windth and depth. About ten meters high, this massive, magnificent structure has a roof with projecting purlins and a front verandah. The clay sculptures and mural paintings inside the hall are in good state of preservation. Mention should be made of the nine painted clay figures, which have not changed a lot over past centuries. Shaped with a realist accuracy and painted in a fresh yet gentle manner, they are really superior examples of the Ming dynasty clay sculpture. They are well orchestrated,in terms of subject matter, with the 80sq-m paintings on the insides of the gables.
