The fragment is the sole tangible sample of the Gaochang kingdom calendar. The original calendar was cut into a shoe pattern, of which only the sole part hasbeen left. It includes ganzhi(sexagenery circle)over a period of seventy—one days, and Zhonggi(solar terms)over a period of ten months. After the author's careful study, the exact year of the calendar is found out, with ganzhi of the whole year of 384 days reconstructed. The discovery supports the hypothesis made by the late Prof. Li Zheng that the Gaochang kingdom had its own calendar. An interesting fact about this calendar is that while written on paper, it adopted the arrangement of the Han calendar inscribed on wooden or bamboo slips, which seems fo be a necessary link of the whole developmental chain of Chinese calendar. So, discovery and study of this fragment not only provide the Chinese calendar history with new materials, but shed new light on the history of the Gaochang kingdom.
