Abstract Xie Fangde was a famous scholar in the last years of the Song Dynasty.After the fall of the Song Dynasty to the Mongols, he would rather die than pledge loyalty to the conquerors. Xie Fangde made great achievement in various fields of literary creation. He even initiated a new form of criticism-commentary notes. The present paper comments on Xie Fangde's life and work, especially his anthology of classical prose entitled Ways of Writing Essay, in which the essays were all selected and annotated by him, and introduces the features of the book, such as the purpose of compilation, the principles for choosing essays and the ways of making commentary notes etc. In fact, Ways of Writing Essay is a pioneer work of the school of commentary notes and very important in the history of Chinese literary criticism.
