On Han Yu's Important Place in Chinese Intellectual History

韩愈在中国思想史上占有重要地位。韩愈代表作《原道》提出《大学》所说“诚意、正心、修身、齐家、治国、平天下”的理论，实系上承孟子而下启宋明理学，对中国的士大夫下及近世知识分子有重大教育作用，属于应予发扬的优秀文化传统。

Han Yu takes an important place in Chinese intellectual history. By quoting from the Great Learning the theory of ' Good Intention, Upright Heart, Self-cultivation, Family Harmony, State Governing and world Peace', he traces back to Mencius and carries on throught to Neo-Confucianism of Song-Ming period. The theory he advocates has an instructional influence on both ancient and modern intellectuals in China, which is yet to be displayed further as a fine tradion of Chinese culture.
