On Quantity

量是质的存在方式，是质的规模和等级的标示。量具有二重性，即规模量是横向伸张量，是质的广度的标示，它的变化与质无涉，等级量是纵向进展量，是质的深度的标示，它的变化与质紧密相连。规模量的变化不引起根本质变，等级量的变化则能引起根本质变。因此，所谓“量变过程”指的是等级量的进展过程。事物发展的渐变过程，是质量统一的辩证过程，因此，等级量的进展过程。

Abstract Quantity, as a way of existence of quality, marks both extent and degree of quality. Duality of quantity can be understood in terms of its extent as an extension of quality and in terms of its degee as a depth of quality. While the change of its extent does not often cause qualitative change, the change of degree does cause qualitative change. Therefore, quantity change, seen as the development of degree in quantity, is itself an expression of the gradual change in quality.
