The Fuquanshan site is located to the west of Chonggu Township and about 9 km to the northeast of the county seat of Qingpu, Shanghai. In the center of the site is a large earth mound. Trial excavation was carried out in 1979 and formal one in 1982. Deposits of the Majiabang, Songze and Liangzhu cultures were discovered. Also excavated are tombs that belong to the Neolithic, Warring States period and Tang and Song Dynasties. The remains of the Songze culture, an important content of the site, are found beneath all other layers at the bottom of the mound. They can be divided into an earlier and a later period. The earlier layer is rather thin, about 50 cm, and yielded mainly pottery along with some bone and tooth objects. Among the pottery are the fu-cauldron, ding-tripod, dou-stemmed vessel, pot and grate. Some of these objects show traits of the Majiabang culture suggesting that this complex is of the earliest type of the Songze culture linking to the Majiabang culture. The later layer is thicker, measuring about 1 m. It contains 1 ashpit, 1 fireplace, 1 firepit and 16 tombs, from which were found a large number of relics including jade, stone bone, tooth and pottery objects. Of the 16 tombs, 14 are of single burial and 2 of joint burial (1 double-burial, 1 triple-burial). All dead are in an extended supine position, with the head mostly pointing to the south. 5 tombs were found without any funerary objects. The fenerary objects in the other tombs range from 1 to 15 pieces.
