The Lebanese questionhas an extremely complex background.It is an indication of the rivalry for sta-te power between Christian and Muslim factions,and at the same time is inter-woven with the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Palestinian question.And it is theLeban ese people who are the victims of the war.At present,the reconciliation-prone moderate forces within both Christian and Muslim factions are on thedecline for influence while the rising hard-liners extract even higher political prices.Moreover,there is no prospect for removing the external military presence.Allthese factors serve to prolong the war.
