This paper reports on a test on the pragmatic competence of 110 Chinese college students who have completed their third-year work in English. By a quantitative analysis of the testing results, the author identifies nine areas in which Chinese students are likely to fail: (1) addressing; (2) greeting; (3) introducing: (4) phatic communion; (5) leave-taking; (6) requesting; (7) asking questions; (8) making an offer; and (9) apologizing.
