The relationship between Islam and Caliphate is the focus of concerns in
the study of the political theory of Islam. Rooted in the time-honoured
Islamic tradition, Caliphate as a classical form of state and government in
Medieval Islam as pre-ordained by Allah and approved by the Sharia had a
profound imprint on the Islamic culture whose influence on modern politics
of the Middle East can still be felt today. This has been borne out by the
Islamic Resurgence in the Muslim world in the past decade. This paper atte-
mpts to offer a brief historical account of the origin, forms and transformations
of those traditional political theories and systems of Islam, thus bringing to
light their inherent nature and trends of development. A correct solution to
the contemporary issues and problems faced by the Islamic Middle East
countries can possibly be sought out only when the Islamic peoples take a
critical stand to their own Islamic kistorical legacy.
