CHANGES IN THE MIDDLE EAST POLITICAL PATTERN AFTER IRAQ'S INVASION OF KUWAIT

自从第二次世界大战以来,中东一直是战乱频仍,动荡不安。由于阿以矛盾,先后爆发四次阿以战争;1975年以来,黎巴嫩陷入内战;1980年又爆发长达8年的两伊战争。至于小规模的冲突更是难以数计。最近。

Owing to the rivalry between the U.S.and U.S.S.R.in the middle east, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the contradictions among the Arab countrie, the Arab world was for long in a state of division. But in recen years,because of cha- nges in the international situation, and evolution of various cotadictions in the middle east, a gratifying trend of solidatity and unity has emerged with the Arab countries. Its chief manifestations are such as lessening of con- tradictions and conflicts between the Arab countries Egypt's return to the Arab community, further enhancement of regional cooperation. The Iraq's inva- sion of Kuwait on August 2 has, however, caused a halt to this Process,with the Arab countries sinking into even greater division and realignment, the ori- ginal organizations for regional cooperation have almost completely collapsd, the 21-member Arab Alliance being split into two camps, the Anti-Iraqi camp of 12 headed by Egypt,Syria and Saudi Arabia on the one hand, and the pro- Iraqi alliance of 5 on the other.With. PLO in support of Iraq,and the military involvement of the U. S. and other western countries, more difficulties have been added to the settlement of the Palestine Problem,and not only that,an even greater division is being bred among the Arab countries, thus the mid- dle east situation tends to be more turbulent and unstable.
