English adverbs ending in“-ly”are more than what they are.In additon to theirlexical meanings, they often acquire,in practical use, some kind of associate meanings(subordinate messages as they are called in this essay),which will otherwise haveto be produced by other much more complicated grammatical structures. In the processof translation, therefore, serious errors can be committed if proper attention has notbeen paid to them. This essay lists eight situations in which“-ly”adverbs are oftenused and where, too, different degrees of subordinate messages may be applied tothem. The essay also attempts to analyze these messages and explore the possibilitiesof how they can be conveyed in Chinese. The purpose of this tentative study is just toprovide reference for the teaching of English, the translation of English literatu-res,and the establishment of a more practical grammatical theory than the presentones.
