2.3.2 Grammatical Equivalence When we discuss grammatical equivalence, werestrict the term ’grammar’ to that part of the an-alysis of language which is handled under the head-ings of syntax. Syntax treats the way in whichwords combine to form sentences. That is whywe can also term grammatical equivalence assyntactic equivalence or structural equivalence. As an illustration of this notion we may lookat the eight major clause patterns for English andcompare them with their Chinese equivalents:
