摘要
对印度种姓制度的研究,起自上个世纪下半叶欧洲“印度学”的兴起。一百多年来,种姓研究经历了很大的变化,人们对种姓的认识也越来越深入。法国社会学家路易斯·杜蒙(Luis Dumout)把种姓研究划分为三个时期:自上个世纪中叶到1900年为第一时期,即以解释态度占主导地位的时期;1900年到1945年为第二时期,此时期内,解释态度虽然仍继续存在,但许多学者己开始从解释转向描述;自第二次世界大战以来为第三个时期,这是以人类学的实际调查为主的精细研究(intensive studies)时期。这种划分方法未必妥当,但战前与战后的研究无论在方法论抑或内容方面都有很大不同则是事实。本文根据所能看到的材料,从战前和战后两个阶段试对这一问题作一概述。
