This paper is centred on the discussion of the English sentence frag- ment which,seemingly an illegitmate sentence,frequently occurs in collo- quial English,idiomatic expressions and literary works.The colloquial and idiomatic use of the sentence fragment is sometimes considered a bet- ter form for communication and the deliberate use of it in literary works may produce various rhetorical effects——laying emphasis on an idea,add- ing force to an emotion,helping build a climax,making the language more vivid and more specific,etc.In written English,using the English sentence fragment haphazardly will lead to a simple grammatical error.
