Reviewing the political developments of Western Europe in the 80s, five features can be summed up as follows. The overall political stability can not be altogether free from tension. Prevalent as nationalism is today in Western Europe. 'European Concept' is yet to take shape with European Union still progressing at snail's pace. Left-wing forces have become very much divided amidst turbulence while conservative thinking is making its comeback with new momentum. When politics is turning pluralistic ideological development is at the ebb. Slow economic growth is coupled with high-rate unemployment. Last of all, there will appear a strong tendency for non-cleague activities and for a breakthrough so far as defence cooperation is concerned in Western Europe.
