Objective to compare the different perceptions among public health -relevant practitioners and college students of the current Chinese translation('ylwai shanghai')of the term 'unintentional injury',which impliesa meaning in Chinese that an injury happened by chance. Methods Stratified and cluster samplings were used to select health practitioners and college students.A survey was carried out among the partieipants about the preventability implied by the Chinese translation of'unintentional injury'.Chi-square test was employed to compare the preventability perceived by participants of the two groups, with a=0.05.Results 335 and 684 valid completed questionnaires were colledted from health-relevant practitioners(of 46.0% were males)and college students (of 46.5%were males),respectively.10% of health practitioner responders and 19% of college responders understood that the occurrence of 'yiwai shanghai'was due to a bad luck.Another 12% of health practitioner responders and 19% of college responders replied that they did not know ifa'yiwai shanghai'can be prevented. The difference of the two percentages(12% vs 19%)is statistically significant (x^=24.793,p<0.05).The differences among the sub-groups of each group ,however, were not statistically significant. Conelusion The results lead to a suggestion of changing the Chinese tranalation of 'unintentional injury'from the eurrent 'yiwai shanghai'or 'feiguyi shanghai',the latter two articulate the 'unintentional'meaning of the term.
