摘要
数学在一个阶段的发展情况主要与当时社会给数学提供的条件、数学的基础以及从事数学研究的人有关。宋元时期有一批水平较高的知识分子从事数学研究,数学基础和社会条件都比较好,加上数学工作者比较重视科学的抽象方法,因而使数学发展达到了高度的繁荣。传统数学的局限性可以妨碍数学的进一步发展,但不能导致数学的衰退。元中叶与明代数学的衰退,主要由这个时期的科举考试制度,唯心主义理学的泛滥以及统治阶级对知识分子的政策造成的。
The development of mathematics in a period is chiefly related with the research conditions afforded by the society at the time, the foundation of mathematics and the quality of mathematicians. In Song and Yuan Dynasties there appeared many excellent mathematicians, who, with mathematical foundation and social economy in good condition, paid great attention to abstract method. All of these promoted the mathematical prosperity. The limitation of traditional mathematics may arrest the further progress of mathematics, but it will not lead up to its decline. The decline of mathematics in the late Yuan and the Ming Dynasties was caused by an imperial examination system, the unchecked spread of a Confucian school of idealist philosophy of the Song and Ming Dynasties and the policy of the ruling class towards intellectuals.
