This article discusses four aspects of the com- plicated influence of foreign literature on Yu Dafu,and on the four major characteristics of his works.Besides the decisive influence of French writers,especially Rousseau,on Yu Dafu's style,sentimentalism and pessimism also have bad some effect on his style.Owing to the cir- cumstance in which he lived,his characters resemble Turgenev's 'Superfluous man'to some extent;while in structure and writing technique his works are more like Japanese Watakushi- Shōsetsu.
