Basing his studies on the histoy and political struggle in modern China, the author directs his research towards the connotation and manifestation of the national spirit radiating from the modern Chinese literature. He points out that it is the intense consciousness of the nation's sufferings and the national spirit of revolt againt enemies, the writer's sense of historical mission and his spirit of literary innovation and creation, and the noble sense of national integrity and the dauntless spirit of devotion that combined to form the main trend of the modern Chinese literature characteristic of a patriotic spirit of anti-imperialism and feudalism, vividly presenting the features of the age, and thereby becoming a powerful cohesion of all writers and vigorously propelling the movement of innovation in modren literature.
