Abstract The paper presents an analysis of the meanings of modal verbs and regards them as unity of opposites in terms of intrinsic vs intrinsic,subjective vs objective and hypothetical vs factual, which can be transformed into each other in context, with indeterminate cases of gradience,ambiguity and merger.According to this model, the author discusses modal verbs as to their behaviour on deixic shift, illocutionary acts, appropriateness of use, as well as on linguistic structures, revealing their dependence on the discourse function.He argues that modal verbs are essentially a dialectical combination of grammaticalized discourse features with semantic categories.
