This is a review of Professor Hu Mingyang's works: (1) His study of the Beijing dialect, a remarkable achievement; (2) his essay on Putonghua, an enlightening discussion; (3) his description of the 'smooth-flowing sentence' , which is considered imprecise and unsatisfactory and (4) his attempt to find a basic grammatical meaning common in all uses of the same grammatical form, which is regarded as a conjecture based on no substantial evidence.
