Some Notes on Wang Shizhen’s 1708 Draft of On Poetry

王士禛,字子真,一字贻上,号阮亭,别号渔洋山人。山东新城人,顺治十五年(1658年)进士及第,由扬州司理累官至刑部尚书。康熙五十年(1711年)卒,年七十八。乾隆三十年(1765年)赐谥文简。士稹原名后犯清世宗讳,雍正时改为士正,乾隆四十年(1775年))又奉旨以“祯”字代之,故称其名者,前后多不一致。王士模工诗文,博学好古,能鉴别书画、鼎彝之属,精金石篆刻之类,曾与修国史、明史,熟悉朝章典籍,以博闻名于时。官务之余潜心致力于著述,攻诗和古文辞,被尊为诗坛圭臬、一代文宗,与朱彝尊并名,称“南朱北王”。一生著述甚多。

Wang Shizhen is a well established poet and critic who split the fame of 'Northern Wang and southern Zhu' with another contemporary big name Zhu Yizun. The present draft of eight pages. which is in the collection of the Liaoning Museum, contains eight entries of comments on poetry. The first draft of On Poetry, of some sixty entries, was finished in 1705. And three years later, in the autumn of 1708, the second draft was written, in which Wang added one hundred and sixty entries. According to the author, the eight entries in question were part of the 1708 addition, and written just two years from Wang's death, thus among his latest remains identifiable so far.
