AbstractBased on the latest Brifish archive sources,this article for the first time examines British poli-cy towards Taiwan province of China after the second World war.Britain was not willing toworsen its relations with China,nor to break Anglo一American alliance for the Taiwan Question.Therefore,Britain’s policy was Janus-faced.On the one hand,Britain recognlzed that Taiwanbelonged to China and should be returned to the P.R. C;On the other hand,Britain supported theAmercan attempt to neutralize Taiwan.Later,Britain even followed American“Two China’s”policy.The revelation of the dual nature of the British policy shall be helpful in understanding thewestern attitude towards the Taiwan Question at present.
