AbstractIn his early days of being in power, recognizing“the existing historical and cul-tural disparities between the South and the North”,Gaafar Mohamed Nimeri allowedthe Southerners to enjoy autonomy granting them various equal rights. It eased thelong conflict with the south,and led the whole country into a period of peaceful devel-opwent.However,because of his class limitations and for lack of the will to entirely e-mancipate all the nationalities,and particularly owing to his growing desire of keepingpersonal power,he repudiated the differences between the south and the North,andcarried out a policy of forced assimilation later on. It again intensified the North- South friction and gave foreign powers the opportunity to interfere in the internal af-fairs of Sudan. The experience and lessons left by Nimeri are indeed worty thinkingabout.
