he present paper has traced the origin and dcvelopment of “Po─yi”, the appella-tion of married woman and wife, according to the relative materials of Han Annuals,Dunhuang Mss and inscriptions in murals un the Dunhuang Grattoes. The word “Po─yi”first appeared in the inscription of Cave 33 in the Yulin Grattoes , Anxi, in the SongDynasty. This appellation was very popular in the areal of Shaanxi and Gansu in the pe-riod of Qing Dynasly and Republic of China. At first , it was the tille of respect wsed towoman, but became a derogatory term in the Qing Dynasty. Since the founding of ourPeople' s Republic , the word “Po-yi”has become neuter noun used to women in a generalsense .
