Shakespeare's sonnets with four stanzas at the beginning follow ing the principle of 'beginning, development, transition and reiteration' resemble a four - act play in the procedure of development. This kind of form adds dramatic colouring to the development of the sonnet. There are altogether 154 sonnets, with each being an individual one and, on the whole, they can be regarded as a complete series of sonnets. The reason that it can be considered a four-act play is that it demonstrates the conflicts and relationships between individuals, the relationship between Man and Nature and the relationship between Man, Time and Space. It is from this that people obtain a profound philosophical message conveyed in Shakespeare's sonnets.
