Abstract Looking back the course of Africa since independence, we are able to see clearly the realities of Africa today:First, for over 30 years since independence, no foreign political models or development programmes were able to change Africa, or were eventually accepted by the African people; Second, Africa today has kept its own historical and cultural traditions and sense of value;Third, no changes have taken place to the lopsided colonial economy, or the single-crop export economy brought by the colonial rule and exploitaton; Fourth, the international position of the Black Africa today is of dual nature.Facing grim international political and economic situations, the young African countries have the ability to overcome numerous difficulties and crises, and march forward step by step: Africa will re-establish peace and stability through striking a new balance for its internal forces; with political situations becoming stable, African economy will gradually recover and develop;Africa will be able to re-attract foreign investment with its internal political stability and economic recovery.Black Africa is now at a crucial period of transition with crises and opportunities in co-existance. It has chances to re-build peace and stability, and embark on the road to reinvigorating its economy, though the process will be long and formidable.
