Abstract Max doesn't have three children, but he has two”,“Max doesn't have three children indeed, he has four”represent two typical types of the negation of quantifiers, with the former being“ordinary negation”, the latter,“the negation of implicature”.This paper discusses the grammatical process of the negation of quantifiers, taking Levinson's Qprinciple as the guiding principle. The quantifiers concerned may be grouped into scales such.as“Qn, Qn-1, Qn-2,… Q1”. The result of negating one on the scale should be found in the“negative opposite”to the one negated.
