Abstract According to Dr. Eugene A. Nida, there are four major approaches to the theories of translation, viz, philological, lingUistic, communicative and semiotic. The linguistic approach, once advocated by some western theorists, has been proved to be infeasible, owing to the indeterminacy of the meaning of words and sentences in different languages, and the impossibility to bring about a unity of form and meaning between SL and TL. A new tendency is to take the semiotic approach, which focuses on the equivalence of meaning rather than the correspondence of linguistic forms between SL and TL, aiming at a logical solution of the basic contradiction of translation. A choice of the correct approach is considered as essential to the successful theorization of translation.
