Abstract The paper discusses the social and psychological causes for the complimenting and belittling speech acts in language. The authors propose that it is the human desire to keep an equal social and psychological balance in social interactions that leads to the frequent exchanges of complimenting and belittling speech acts. The paper also studies the same speech acts in power and solidarity relationships.
