Jerome David Salinger's masterpiece The Catcher in the Rye is the most influential initiation novel in contemporary Western literature and has been thoroughly studied in the West,especially in the United States.It has acquired the reputation of Salinger Industry because of the number of essays and monographs published.This thesis makes a survey of these researches by the categories of literary tradition,theme of the novel,characteristics of the language of the novel,and critical approaches applied by the critics.
