Abstract The political modernization of Saudi Arabia started in 1920s and has gone through three periods--the initial period (1926-1957), the deeping and reform period (1958-1974),and the development period (since 1957). It has many characteristics as follows: 1. the distinct features of the Wahhabite lslam;2. a political system of limited integration of religion with politics; 3. a form of government of family monarchy; 4. a pronounced welfare colour;5. a plural and mixed pattern; 6. a stand for moderation and gradualness as well as for conciliation and compromise. Pushed by favourable factors both internal and external,the modernization in the country has made numerous advances which are of progressive significance. However,in essence it is merely a sort of capitalist political modernization with a great many limitations.
