AbstractThe Islamic tide of 1990s in Saudi Arabia was touched off by the Gulf war, having taking shape through the inter-action of various factors. By opposing the infiltration of the western forces, advocating the elimination of corruption and calling for social equality and fairness, the Islamists reflect to some degree the aspiration of the Moslem masses of Saudi Arabia; however, their attempt to counter-balance modernization with all-round Islamization and to construct puritanism and utopia is in essence a retrogress. On the other hand, owing to Saudi Arabian Kingdom's intrinsic religious and territorial features as well as its specific national conditions, it is impossible for Saudi's royalties to leave Islam and survive independently. The road chosen by the Saudi government is to find a best linking point between the secular and the religion, and between the tradition and the modernization, and promote modernization and political democratization with slow but gradual reforms. But all these must be realized under the pre-condition of maintaining stability of the country. Therefore, to seek csocial and political development amid stability will be the long-term objective of the Saudi government.
