Abstract In recent years,Russia has actively involved itself in the Gulf area, not only posing a check on the US and a challenge to its hegemony in the area,but also playing an important role in balancing the strength of various forces in the region:Firstly,it has played an important role in settling the Iraqi-Kuwaiti boundary crisis;Secondly,it has checked the US policy of dual containment against Iran and lraq;Thirdly,it has relaxed the contradictions among the Gulf countries;Fourthly,it has restored its export of arms and ammunition,thus diversifying source of procuring weaponery for the Gulf countries.What Russia has done is certainly meant for its oWn political and economic benefit,but having managed to keep a balance with both the competing parties and various sides of the region, it has helped all sides attain a parity of strength and cooperation as against imbalance and conflict,thus producing the objective effect of pinning down the US,an act conducive to the security and stability of the Gulf area and in conformity to the interest of the people there as well.
