This article is a textual research and interpretation of Karl Marx's theory of' grafting' .It argues that Marx's discovery that the production mode employed on American slave plantations was introduced from outside (Europe)and then 'grafted' onto the slave system, correctly solved the problem of the economic nature and historical origins of slave plantations in America. This article also points out that the reason Marx considered the'capitalistic production'to be only'formal' was that he thought the pursuit of surplus value under this form of production was materialized mainly through direct labor ,whose attachment to capital was realized by force (not of free will) ,hence being only formal,not substantial.
