明初,在朝贡体制重建过程中,明朝的海上力量起到了决定性作用。永乐帝通过纠正洪武帝在海上力量投向上的错误,使明朝海军具备了向南洋、西洋地区进行远洋投送和作战的能力,为将该地区国家纳入朝贡体制提供了强有力的军事支持。同时得益于明朝海军的远洋投送与作战能力,才使明政府在不自觉的状态下控制了朝贡贸易的核心——货币发行权和贸易定价权,从而确保明政府在官方主导的朝贡贸易中大获其利。
