意识一直是亨利.詹姆斯创作中的主题。其后期作品《使节》尤以对人物意识的处理见长,主人公斯特瑞赛前后的意识变化是理解这部小说的关键所在。对此问题批评者侧重于从社会,文化等外部因素分析,很少关注到人物自我的发展。文章从意识批评的角度入手,分析了他意识的变化轨迹,表现形态以及与他者意识的对抗,由此指出他意识变化的原因在于他自我意识的不断发展和成熟,从而在自我的追寻和重构中实现主体的自治。

Consciousness was always the subject in Henry James' works.He was especially skilled in dealing with characters' consciousness in his later works The Ambassadors and the changes of the Lambert Strether's consciousness is the key to understand the novel.The majority of critics have centered on the discussion from external social and cultural factors,but neglected the development of the self-consciousness.From the perspective of ideology criticism,this article analyzed the changing tracks and presenting forms of his consciousness,as well as his confrontation to other consciousness,based on which,it pointed out that the continuous development and mature of Lambert Strether's consciousness are the causes of the changes and he achieved subject autonomy in the course of self-persuit and reconstrction.
