Early in last aurumn, Eduardo Chillida Jauregui passed away. The world mourns the last great figure in sculpture field in the 20th century, and I also mourn him. one of my friends.
Etluardo Chillida Jauregui (1942- 2002) was born in San Sebastian of Spain. He majored in architecture at first; then his interest turned into sculpture. He was famous for his intricate- structured abstract sculptures that contain profound philosophic connotations. He is good at harmonizing different materials such as iron, stone, cement and china clay, and reveal different aesthetic appeals from respective material He has left many great works in his homeland of Spain, and also in other countries in Europe and America. He is especially praised for his monumental sculpture. For example, his sculpture in San Sebastian entitled 'Comb of the Wind', finished in 1979 and another piece in Cijon by the name of 'Salute to the Sea Leval', finished in 1987 could be pur into the classic canon in the world sculpture history. Long befor our meet in 1990. I have already heard of this sculptor and watched some of lux works. Then in June 5th of that year in the dinner party after in inaugurate of Anthony Tapies fund, I was introduced to him by Mr.Tapies. Our friendship thus began, and was deepened through mails and our meetings aftermath.
10 years ago Jaurcgui mentioned to me his plan for keeping his works for setting up his museum, and now his dream is fulfilled. Jauregui Museum stands in Soilaga Fazenda left to San Sebastian, and his son Luis Chillda is the curator. Built in the I6th century and retrodden by Chillda and an architect Joaq(?) Montero, the fazenda becomes a perfect place for Chillda's sculptures. Although many modern museums in the world display Chillda's sculptures, this fazenda might be the only one that can reflect the whole process of Chillda's career.
The best way to memorize an artist is to let more people know him through his works.
The following pictures are taken in Chillda' s house, his museum and somewhere else where his sculptures are kept. They stand for my eternal memory to my friend.
