Martyr's Spirit:Du Fu's Ideal of Life

尧舜稷契的"太平盛世",是近代民主思想产生以前封建社会一切正直士大夫共同的理想,杜甫在这一点上没有任何超出于他人的高明之处;甚至在忠君、恋主的封建思想"情结"上比之其他一些人还要执著,对现实中根本不可能再现的"理想社会"的迷恋那种乌托邦情怀显得尤其"愚""拙"。杜甫的这"执著"、这"愚拙",正是他高出于世俗、时流之处,正是他理想的至诚之所在,正是他思想精神的闪光点。他真真正正是为了这理想社会的再现无怨无悔地奋斗了一生,为他心目中至为崇高的"大道之行"而殉身。

The'time of peace and prosperity' worshiped by Yao and Shun, legendary monarchs in ancient China, is the common ideal of all the upright literati and officialdom in feudal China before the democratic thoughts of modern times came into being. On this point, Du Fu doesn't go beyond others. Moreover, he is more rigid in the complex of being loyal and attached to the monarch, he appears a bit stupid and awkward when he expresses addiction and Utopian feelings to the 'ideal society' that is unlikely to reappear in reality. Du Fu s rigidity and stupidity show that he has nobler thoughts than common people, straightforward ideal and shining spirit of thinking. He actually devotes his lifetime to struggling for the reappearance of the ideal society and sacrifices his life for the 'lofty undertaking' in his mind.
