Zuo Zongtang's Contributions to Ecological Treatment in China's Northwest

左宗棠在就任陕甘总督、督办新疆军务的紧张繁重的军事、政治活动之外,对西北的生态环境建设,也推行了一系列朴素但却富有针对性的环保举措,主要涉及到植树造林、兴修水利、合理开发和利用土地、禁种罌粟、引桑植棉、建设市政设施等方面,并对之认真加以实施,取得了明显的实绩实效,为西北地区近代经济的开发和发展创造了较好的社会条件和生态环境。研究总结左宗棠的环保思想及政绩,对今天搞好西部大开发具有重要的借鉴作用。

When he was the governor of Shaanxi and Gansu and the supervisor of the military affairs of Xinjiang, Zuo Zongtang pursued a series of simple but effective measures of environmental protection, including planting trees, building water conservancy projects, opening up and exploiting land reasonably, prohibiting planting opium poppy, introducing cotton and mulberry, municipal construction. He carried out these measures conscientiously and scored remarkable achievements, creating a better social and ecological environment for the economic development in China's northwest region.Zuo Zongtang's ideas and achievements in environmental protection are of great significance for the development of China's northwest today.
