From the theoretical,empirical and pedagogical points of view,the review provides a detailed introduction of the book Testing & Teaching Spoken English written by Wen qiufang. The significant points about the book are that oral English testing and teaching are combined and that the conclusions are made on the basis of a lot of empirical studies.The originality of the book is that it develops the mode of communicative competence into a more comprehensive mode of Cross-cultural Communicative Competence and the author of the book regards the development of thinking ability as an important part in speaking.In addition,though very academic,the book is easy to read because the author has tried to put complicated theories and analysis in comparatively simple words.Although there remain some points not so convincing,the book is on the whole instructive,informative and readable.
