A Brief Introduction to Zheng Qian and Taizhou Culture in the Tang Dynasty

台州汉唐之时犹号僻左之地,贬满之所,自唐乾元至广德年间,郑虔贬为台州司户,以地方官员身份首办官学,设帐授徒,“教以正学”,“淑以诗书”,逐步、有序地使华夏文化涵化了古越文化,被台州人民推崇为“台州文教之祖”。

In the Han and Tang Dynasties, Taizhou was still known as a remote and closed - up districtwhere banished officials were settled. During the Qianyuan and Guangde years in the Tang Dynasty,Zheng Qian was banished from the court and became an official in charge of household registration inTaizhou. Here he became the first person to run a public school in the capacity of an official. He taughtthe students orthodox classics, supplemented by literary works such as poetry. Because he gradually andsystematically enabled the ancient culture of the Kingdom of Yue to be contained in Chinese culture, hehas been esteemed as the 'ancestor of culture and education' of Taizhou ever since.
