Sophia and three other British girls departed Edinborough on March 19, 1999 to start their Silk Route Expedition. They first arrived in Turkmenistan, from where they rode on horseback from west to east along the Silk Route. They arrived in Tn'ernaite in Xinjiang on July 1. Then they changed to camel' s back and rode through Kashi, Hefu, Ruoqiang, Dunhuang, Lanzhou and Pingliang to Xi'an. They covered some 5,000 kilometers in China within 170 days. Each day they put their accounts of the expedition to the Internet for people to share their experience.
