论弗莱之语言发展循环说

弗莱继《批评的解剖》提出文学发展循环理论之后 ,又在其著名的《伟大的代码———圣经与文学》一书中提出了另一循环理论。他认为人类语言的发展轨迹也是一个环状结构 ,走过了三个语言发展阶段 ,如今周而复始 ,似乎又回到第一个阶段开始了另一个环行运动。弗莱在阐述这三个语言阶段的不同特征及它们之间的相互关系后 ,指出圣经语言的独特性 ,视其为并不汇入语言循环的第四种语言模式。

In the wake of his theory of circular movement in literature in Anatomy of Criticism,Frye put forward another theory of circular movement in language development in The Great Code:the Bible and Literature.He draws a new orbit in the development of human language,which has now completed a ring through the three phases and started afresh from the very first phase.On a pile of his expounding of the typical features in each phase and the adherences between them three,he brings forth a fourth language mode in biblical language,which does not join in the circular movement for its uniqueness.By this new theory,Frye provides a totally new perspective for the linguistil studies throughout the world and has had a marked effect upon them.
