Since this May, the World Horticulture Expo'99 in Kunming, China has drawn global attention. Tourists flock to the World Horticulture Expo Park from around the world. At the entrance of the park stretches a road, 800 m long, 80 m wide and bordered by flower beds composed of 700,000 pots of colorful flowers. There are 5 flower columns and 1 flower boat in the flower sea, symbolizing that the people of the 5 continents enjoy peaceful coexistence and jointly sail toward the 21st century. Behind the China Hall with an area of 3 ha, extends the outdoor China Zone, covering an area of 48,000 sq m. In the zone, 2 green belts running through from south to north symbolize the Yangtze and Yellow rivers, around which the exhibition gardens of 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions are basically laid on the respective locations on the China's map. The distinctive gardening art and horticulture style of different parts of the country are fully displayed here. The International Zone sits on a U-type valley between Hall of Man and Nature and World Hall, consisting of 6 exhibition areas, representing Asia, Europe, Africa, America, Australia and international organizations. There are 32 permanent exhibition gardens in the zone, showing the different style, characteristics, tradition and development level in gardening and horticulture of various countries and regions. As the manager of the International Exhibition Co. of the World Horticulture Expo, Mr. Yang Mian said that 'We are not able to make comparison to say which is the best because the exhibition garden of every participating country is quite exquisite and every garden has its own distinguishing feature.' So far, some 200,000 trees of 1,500 varieties have been transplanted and planted in the park. There are 6 exhibition gardens with special themes: tree garden, tea garden, bamboo garden, medicinal herb garden, miniature landscape garden, vegetable and fruit garden, showing the developing process and present status of various flora. Especially, the Great Hothouse accommodates the plants and vegetations of different climatic zones in different geographical regions at all seasons thanks to the application of high and new technologies. In the Tree Garden, one can see the oldest, the rarest and most poisonous trees.
