The Chinese “人口爆炸” translated from English “population explosion” is often criticized within the academic circles. Through both diachronic and synchronic survey of the changes in meaning of the word “explosion” and the context in which the changes took place, this paper argues, from perspectives of metaphorical cognition and equivalent translation, that “population explosion” is a metaphorical concept and that the translation “人口爆炸” should have access to the Chinese language.
