The translation of new words and new meanings has always been a demanding job.To provide a faithful equivalent,one has to acquire enough background information,cultural or social.The translation of the new meanings of “surf”,as discussed herein,is done with the help of citations culled from newspapers or magazines in English speaking countries.Such a novel practice in the field of lexicography,as pioneered by The Supplement to The English Chinese Dictionary, has undoubtedly made a difference. [
