As one of up to date measurement technique, PIV techniques has been widely accepted and applied. There are a good many diffculties when it is implemented in complicated engineering, e.g.,in naval hydrodynamics. Especially, it is quite a technical challenge to utilize PIV technique in large towing tank. This paper presents a brief overview of a large PIV system used in and outside large towing tank at the National Laboratory of Hydrodynamics, Wuxi, China. Several examples are given to illustrate the wonderful possibilities of using the PIV technique in hydrodynamics research.
